Leora Amir, who had previously dabbled in various art and performance forms, recently (in 2005) got turned on to dance/performance as a serious pursuit after seeing a performance by AXIS Dance, a Physically Integrated contemporary dance company. Leora, currently a grad student in Theater/Dance at California State University Sacramento, has been pursuing choreography, improvisation, contact improvisation, writing, and disability studies.
Leora's performance experiences include a low-paying but highly exciting undergrad gig with Ensemble (a short-lived theater improv group); West African-influenced dance concerts (2004) with Ayo Sharpe-Mouzon; Tied Titan (2005), choreographed by Kayvon Pourazar (formerly of Doug Varone and Dancers) for Dance Sites at CSUS; Snapshots (2006) by Lisa Russo (from Anna Halprin's company) for Dance Sites at CSUS; Tribute choreographed by Sarah Henshaw for the American College Dance Festival (2006); and various random acting and music experiences on stage, radio, film, and living room. Leora is also singer-songwriter who has recorded a CD, The Wooden Prince, under the name Lee Amir.
In December 2007, Leora choreographed her first full dance piece, a structured improvisation entitled Welcoming is About Welcoming and Not Welcoming. Leora is happy to be part of the Dangerous Lorraines DanceTheater and looks forward to more dancing, delving, collaboration, and challenge.
